A Quick update from Utilitopia

I’ve been quiet here for a few days since the introductory post, but only because I’ve been cooking things up behind the scenes. Here’s what’s coming soon:

  • Class and Individualism – I unpack several uses of the word individualism in different contexts and explain why I support it in some cases, but not in others. Spoiler: I’m mixed on economic individualism, but strongly in favor of cultural individualism. As always on this blog, my economic views are pragmatic and open to exploring very different alternatives to the current order.
  • The Education System – A dive into how our education system often seems designed to produce obedient workers as much as it does to genuinely educate. I’ll explore how technology can help more people gain qualifications from home, at their own pace and far lower cost, especially for A Levels, US high school, and other regional equivalents.
  • Economic Growth and Utility – Why do so many politicians and economists conflate GDP growth with real human wellbeing? I acknowledge the correlation, but argue that inequality, work/life balance, environmental sustainability, and where growth occurs all matter too. GDP treats weapon production exactly the same as healthcare, and that’s a problem.

I’ve still got a bit of work to do on the site design. It’s not my favorite part of blogging (I much prefer the writing), but it needs to be done.

Stay tuned—these posts will start landing in the next few days.
